Bhadrapur (Jhapa), Sept 17: More than 500 thousand people are to be vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Jhapa. 

The Public Health Office Jhapa stated that a vaccination campaign will be conducted from September 21 to October 1, targeting citizens over 30 years old in all 15 local levels of the district.

According to the office chief, Brij Kumar Das, the vaccines needed for the campaign have arrived in the district. Preparations like coordinating with the local bodies, training the health workers, and managing the vaccination centers have all been completed.

"The vaccination campaign is being conducted with high alertness as the infection and mortality rate of JE is increasing," he said, adding that necessary preparations have been made in coordination with the local level and health institutions so that no citizen of the target group is left out of the vaccination. 

The office has stated that 570 thousand doses of vaccines have already been received for the campaign. Vaccination services will be operated by setting up 900 vaccination centers in 131 wards of the district. Around 500 health workers, 611 female health volunteers, and more than three thousand volunteers will be deployed in the campaign.

According to Das, the chief of the district public health office, since JE infection rates are high in Jhapa compared to other districts in the country, the vaccination campaign is being launched from here. So far, 13 people in Jhapa have been confirmed with JE infection, out of which seven have died.
