NC urges government to be accountable
Lalitpur, Nov 4: The Nepali Congress has urged the government to carry out its functions based on the rule of law, transparency, and accountability, while upholding the freedom of the media, the safety of journalists, and the autonomy of democratic institutions.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Nepali Congress central office, Senior Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma said an environment must be created where journalists can disclose the truth without pressure from any political party or power center.
Journalists should view the activities of both the ruling side and the opposition through an equal lens.
He explained that the special general convention of the party was held with the participation of general convention delegates in accordance with the party statute and that the Election Commission subsequently updated the party's official records. Noting that this matter had been deliberated in the respected court culminating in a verdict, he expressed his objection to the ongoing rhetoric that questions the Election Commission’s decision and the court’s order.
Senior Vice-President Sharma emphasized that the government should prioritize post-disaster reconstruction, rehabilitation, and the provision of relief to affected citizens. Clarifying that the Congress is prepared to support the government as a responsible opposition, he stated that the party advocates for allowing the current government to continue its work for its full five-year term.
The Congress has expressed serious concern regarding various public statements, audio materials, and allegations linked to party president Gagan Kumar Thapa. Making it clear that the party will not ignore the questions raised in this regard, it has demanded an independent, impartial, fact-based, and credible investigation.
Urging the government to conduct a fact-finding investigation into the allegations leveled against the party's leadership and the materials currently circulating in the public domain, Senior Vice President Sharma stated that the Nepali Congress is prepared to face any form of inquiry.
The Nepali Congress has reiterated its commitment to the independence of the judiciary, the strengthening of state institutions, and the rule of law. Senior Vice President Sharma emphasized that when the government initiates investigations or takes action against any individual or entity, it must clearly present sufficient facts, evidence, and a legal basis. Noting that transparency, accountability, and the rule of law are indispensable in a democratic system, he stated that political parties, government bodies, and all other state institutions must adhere to legal processes.
