Kathmandu, Oct 13: The Department of Immigration (DoI) has expanded nationwide the information system it first implemented to monitor the activities, manage travel, and facilitate foreign nationals in Nepal.

At the Foreign Nationals Management Information System Orientation Programme held by the department in Nagarkot, Bhaktapur on Monday, the department's director, Shiva Lamsal, said that the foreign nationals management information system has been implemented nationwide to collect details like where foreign nationals go and stay until they leave Nepal.

He said that since records are only kept of foreign nationals entering Nepal at the airport and leaving from the airport, there is no information about where those who do not return have gone or what they are doing, and it has been found that many foreign nationals are involved in crimes.

According to him, 459 foreign nationals were deported in 2025 and 540 foreigners were deported from January 1 to October 10, 2026 for breaking the law.

The DoI Director informed that 64 people who had violated immigration law, stayed contrary to the purpose of entry permits, were found guilty under the country's law, and were involved in various illegal activities were sent back in 2025. Similarly, 61 people were sent back by October 10, 2026 for violating the law.

He said that FNMIS has been implemented to monitor, regulate, manage, secure, and facilitate travel so that foreign nationals entering Nepal on various visas do not engage in activities other than what the immigration law allows.

Director Lamsal mentioned that although this system was implemented in hotels, travel agencies, money exchanges, and so on in the Kathmandu Valley from January 1, 2025, it has now been enforced across the country.

He said that the department has implemented this system with the aim of helping the security of foreign tourists visiting Nepal, facilitating information, controlling potential crimes, and promoting tourism.

Through this system, he mentioned, it is possible to monitor which hotel foreign nationals who enter Nepal stayed at, which places they visited, where they went, and in case they went missing during disasters, where they disappeared, as well as whether their entry permits were according to the law or not.

Department Director Amardeep Sunuwar said that this system allows service provider organizations, hotel operators, domestic airlines, trekking agencies, public transportation, mountaineering agencies, tour and travel agencies, telecom service providers, banks and financial institutions, tourist guides, and tourist police to directly enter information into the department’s system.
